Prepare for the Great Tribulation

John Leary who lives near Rochester, New York, has allegedly been receiving messages from a variety of spiritual sources since his trip to Medjugorje in 1993. Leary has compiled these messages into public talks along with thirteen published volumes entitled, Prepare for the Great Tribulation and the Coming Era of Peace.1

In an attempt to help Catholics survive the end-time tribulation, Leary advises his followers to seek shelter in special hiding places called refuges. Where are these refuges? According to Leary, “Some people after much prayer have been led to prepare their homes for a refuge. In the mountainous regions there will also be caves. Some may find that difficult, but Jesus reminds us that He was born in a cave and fled to a cave in Egypt.”

According to Leary’s website, “All of the places of refuge will have a miraculous spring of water for healing, and there will be a luminous cross over them. Those who look upon the luminous cross will be healed of all diseases and infirmities. At the refuges the food that you have will be multiplied. The angels will provide the manna and like the quail of the Exodus, deer will be provided. The evil ones will not be able to detect the faithful at the refuges by sight, sound, scent, or any other means of detection.”2

In a statement issued during 1999, Bishop Matthew Clark declared that John Leary has misjudged ordinary mental prayer for supernatural communication. Bishop Clark also said that Leary's messages contain doctrinal errors that run counter to the Catholic faith. The following news article contains Bishop Clark’s statements:
